Hi Nicole, I randomly saw your post on facebook and continued to read it. What an inspiration! I hope I can follow some of these same goals in the New Year!! Hope all is well this Christmas and New Year!! I thought of you and Erik last night and I went out til 3am to hang out with friends and have a good time!!! If I'm in VA next September I'm thinking about running/walking the half marathon with the brothers! I'm not much of a runner so we'll see :) Take care and best of luck in the New Year! Ciao

I love this... so inspiring. :)

Your #7 (and Eric's story), in particular, hits close to home for me. I completed the Rock 'N Roll Chicago Half Marathon this past August and it was one of the most awesome experiences of my life. Before beginning training, I had not run longer than a 5K before.

If you're not a regular runner, I would highly recommend a structured training program such as Team In Training (http://www.teamintraining.org/nca/). I'm not sure if they do programs specifically for the VA Beach Half, but I'm sure there is one that will once the race draws closer. I did the AIDS Marathon Training Program for my run, but Team In Training's program (and most other programs of its type, I'm sure) are similar.

They consist of weekly group runs (on either Saturdays or Sundays, depending on the program) that gradually increase in length over the training period, suggested 2-3x weekly maintenance runs, and a fundraising component. The AIDS program I did benefited AIDS research (obviously), while Team In Training programs benefit leukemia and lymphoma research. I believe both the AIDS program and Team In Training use run-walk ratios in their training runs, which have been proven to increase endurance (which is especially important for someone who has never run a half marathon before).

I finished the half in 2 hours, 32 minutes and 21 seconds. With how young and active you are, I'm sure you can do it too. :) And don't hesitate to ask me if you have any other questions.

And a few of these other points (#3 for *sure*) will most likely find its way toward the top of my own priorities for 2010. For the first time in a while I think I'm going to make specific goals (or "resolutions", if you will) for 2010. Thanks for the inspiration, Nicole. :)
